Bead Dreams Competition

I just heard back from the Bead & Button magazine today – my work, specifically The Koi Pond, has been juried into the 2009 Bead Dreams competition in the Metal Clay category! I’m a finalist! :)

It will be on exhibit at the Bead & Button Show – May 31 through June 7, 2009 at Midwest Airlines Center in Milwaukee, WI.

For more information about the show, please visit http://www.beadandbuttonshow.com/bnbshow/default.aspx?c=ts&id=9.

If you can’t see me at a show, and you want to see my work in person, please visit DEKKA in DC!

I just finished another competition piece (for the Bead Art awards) called Agape.

Agape – a handcarved recycled fine silver orchid with ruby. In Chinese symbolism, the orchid stands for divine, unconditional, self-sacrificing, and thoughtful love (which is what Agape means in Greek).

Now at DEKKA!

I’m now showing my work at DEKKA in DC!

I actually met with the owner a couple weeks ago, and yesterday afternoon found out that my first day in the store was going to be today. Had a mad rush last night to purchase displays and to get everything in order (new labels, signage, etc) for this morning. But it’s there! And I’m so excited :)

DEKKA is located in the fashion trendy U Street Corridor, near Dupont Circle. It’s an artist co-op; so you might see me down at the boutique working every now and then!

DEKKA
1338 U St
2nd Floor
(between N 13th St & N 14th St)
Washington, DC 20009

The boutique’s 1 year anniversary is actually coming up on April 4th; there’s going to be a huge trunk show/shopping party extravaganza from 6pm to 10pm. I hope to see some of you there :).

Lapidary Journal: Jewelry Artist (December 2008 edition)

When Scott got home, he gave me an envelope that he picked up at the UPS store (from Fire Mountain Gems). I opened it and guess what, on the first page is a full page ad from Fire Mountain Gems featuring my first cherry blossom piece!!!!!!!

I can’t believe I have a piece in Lapidary Journal – a full page ad!

DC Bead Museum Results!

Awarded 1st Place in Category (Hobbyist*/Clay)/Best in Show (Handmade Beads) in the 1st Annual Bead Museum Washington DC’s Celebrating Beads International Jewelry Design Competition!

*I was placed in the hobbyist category because I don’t create jewelry full time/not main source of income. But the Best of Show award included both pro and hobbyist levels.

Transcendence 3 will be on display at the Bead Museum in downtown Washington D.C. from September 28, 2008 through December 31, 2008 as part of the Celebrating Beads exhibit.

Inspirational Quotes

“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” – Georgia O’Keeffe

I have always found her work inspirational, especially her work with flowers. I definitely relate to her quote. I feel like my art is a way to get people to stop what they’re doing and actually take in and notice the world around them. Because most people are so busy, they don’t take the time to appreciate the beautiful intricacies of nature. The little things. I find these things so amazing. I like being able to take my work, show it to others, and be able to say without saying, “Look at me. The world is beautiful. You just have to look. Notice me.”

“Still – in a way – nobody sees a flower – really – it is so small – we haven’t time – and to see takes time, like to have a friend takes time.” – Georgia O’Keeffe

Black Tie Gala in 2 Weeks!

Remember my Transcendence 3 piece?

I’m a finalist in the competition! I have to ship my piece in the next few days, because it’s going to be on display at their Gala in a couple weeks!!! They’re going to announce the winners at the gala, and if I place, it’ll be on display at the Bead Museum in DC, and it might be part of a traveling show.

This is sooo exciting; the letter mentioned that there will be jewelry magazine editors at this event too. This is an amazing opportunity to get my work out there.

I feel so blessed :) My head feels like it is spinning – amazing things keep happening…

FMG, Saul Bell, Lark Publishing…

Good news – Remember the goldfish pendant I made and submitted to the 2008 Fire Mountain Gems competition? I just got my piece back a couple days ago and it was a finalist in the competition. Not bad – 2 years in a row :)!

I also just finished the piece for the Saul Bell competition; this was the toughest piece I’ve done yet – everything made from raw materials – nothing premade/machine made :) Also, first time I metal worked the piece after the firing (shaping). I’ll post the photo I’m submitting in the next day or so. I’m excited it actually worked! Just a couple hints – it’s cherry blossom themed and it’s a cuff.

Currently getting ready to start work on a piece I want to submit to a book in December. I think I’m going to attempt a ring for this one.

Edit:  I Found a Photo of my Work on FMG’s Website!

Transcendence 3: BSGW Competition

The name of the series I just completed is called Transcendence 3; it’s a series of 3 pendants.

  • 1st – single cherry blossom on a branch
  • 2nd – medallion of DC monuments surrounded by the blooming cherry blossoms, with a photo of mine in the middle (from this year’s cherry blossom festival)
  • 3rd – set of 2 cherry blossoms on a branch

Materials: fine silver, doming resin, photograph on water color paper, sealant

Reason behind the name:

  • In Buddhism, the cherry blossom symbolizes the transience of life – and reminder to appreciate life because time is fleeting.
  • The cherry blossoms in DC symbolize the friendship transcending between Japan and the United States; the cherry blossoms around the tidal basin were a gift from Japan.
  • In Chinese symbolism, the number 3 symbolizes life, living, and birth. This is also the 3rd cherry blossom piece I’ve made. The first was for the 2007 Fire Mountain Gems Beading competition, the 2nd one was unnamed, and this is the 3rd one!

Critique greatly appreciated!

2008 Fire Mountain Gems and Beads Annual Beading Contest

I just got a letter yesterday informing me that my submission for the 2008 contest (Blissful Harmony) has been selected for the next round of judging!!! I have to send my piece in :)

I’m excited and ready to work on the next competition ;)
